Joy Wieters has been writing poetry since age 11, and this website is her way of organizing her work from over the years. She is now 25 and lives in Princeton, MN. Her day job is running Heart to Toe Studios but she moonlights as a Fantasy Novelist, currently working on her second book in a series of six.
Joy enjoyed attending Jerry B. Jenkins' Christian Writers' Conference in 2009 and 2010. She took one course through their Apprentice Program but otherwise studied writing by reading good books, reading books on writing, and filling over 50 journals in the last decade. She recently completed a Shakespeare Challenge which she set for herself. It was "to watch, read, and/or research all of his 38 works." She watched 16, read 5, and wrote reports on all of them. She has nearly completed her C.S. Lewis Challenge: to read 39 of his works. She has only a few books to go. She is also working on a Classics Challenge: to read 60 classics before age 30. She is halfway there.
Joy also has a passion for ballet and for travel. She is the owner of Heart to Toe Studios and has written seven ballets, two based on books in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and The Magician's Nephew. She wrote an original ballet entitled The Mirror in the Faery Wood in 2014 and more recently a gothic tragedy entitled The Lady of the Moors for this coming year. You can find out more info on the studio website.
In 2012 she traveled to London with her graduation money to visit castles and visit the home of her hero, C. S. Lewis. She will never forget the unexpected feeling of Oxford, which exactly matched the feeling she'd sensed from books like A Severe Mercy and Surprised by Joy. She remembers, "There were string musicians on the street and college students in knickers playing crochet. It was so idylic; it was like I missed Lewis by 10 minutes!" She is planning to travel to Oxford for a second time with her 16 year old brother Mark, this time to spend more than a few hours there.
Joy considers herself primarily a storyteller: She tells stories through her ballets, her books, and her poetry. She believes in the inherent power of Story and feels she has learned some of her best lessons from Anakin Skywalker and Jane Grey. Of her poems archived here, she prefers "Two Doors," "Everything," "Softly Falling," "I A Billow," and "Sime" best.
